EVENTS CALENDAR
MARCH 26th – APRIL 1st, 2012

MONDAY March 26th

“Working in the Woods Today” Museum Exhibit - January 27th to April 22nd: ‘Working in the Woods Today’ is a photographic exhibit showcasing the recent history of logging that will be on display at the Museum at Campbell River beginning January 27, 2012. Curated by local photographer and writer Hans Peter Meyer, this exhibition features superb images with informative text about the men and women working in BC’s coastal forest industry in the 21st century. The exhibition is part of a bigger project to produce a large format photo book about BC’s coastal forest industry.
Meyer says that there is an abundance of images from the "glory days of logging," but almost nothing has been published since the 1950s about the industry as a place where real men and women work (in remote locations, and often under dangerous conditions). Meyer grew up in the Comox Valley, and as a young man, worked in the woods and on the booms, and then for several more years in reforestation. In 2002, he started photographing the coastal forest industry, first for Truck Logger Magazine. Examples of his work can be seen at www.coastalforestindustryproject.com.  Be sure to come and see these outstanding photos while there are here! An official opening of the exhibit at the Museum with Meyer will take place in February.  For further information, call the Museum at 250-287-3103.

One that has caught your eye because of its exceptional size or looks, or because it has a unique story attached to it? Now is your chance to share your tree with others in the city’s very first Character Tree Contest.
Contestants will be asked to place their tree in a category – examples of categories are Tallest tree, Historic tree or Wildlife tree, and provide two photos of the tree, a description and location. The tree must be within Campbell River city limits. A character tree can be defined as ‘a notable specimen because of its size, form, shape, beauty, age, colour, rarity or genetic constitution.’
The purpose of the contest is to foster an appreciation of the trees around us, and to involve the community in creating an inventory of significant and unique trees located in Campbell River.
To launch the contest, the Museum at Campbell River will be presenting a talk with writer Harold Macy of Merville on Saturday, March 17, at 1:30pm. Macy’s talk will be based on his recent book The Four Storey Forest - a book that is part memoir and part arboreal adventure, and focuses on the woodlot on his property that burned down, then regenerated. Macy’s reverence for the forest is evident from his observation that “for whatever reasons, when in the forest we are coaxed to let down our defences, allowing something ineffably divine to penetrate deep into our hearts.”
The nomination period for the contest is from March through to the end of September, 2012 and prizes will be presented on Rivers Day, September 29 at the Haig-Brown Festival. Contest forms and details are available in the offices and on the websites of the contest’s sponsors: Greenways Land Trust, the City of Campbell River, the Museum at Campbell River and the Courier Islander, and will also appear in the Courier Islander newspaper. Local businesses as well as contest sponsors are donating the prizes.
For sponsorship information contact Greenways Land Trust operations manager Stacey Larsen, at 250-287-3785. For information regarding Harold Macy’s talk or to register, contact the Museum at 250-287-3103.

*REMINDER*“Working in the Woods Today” Museum Exhibit ~January 27th to April 22nd: ‘Working in the Woods Today’ is a photographic exhibit showcasing the recent history of logging that will be on display at the Museum at Campbell River beginning January 27, 2012.

Double Bill: The Human Statues and The Good Lovelies: Originally from Vancouver Island, The Human Statues are on a mission to spread "jubilation" across the nation. Often described as a cross-breed between the Flight of the Conchords and Simon and Garfunkel, Jeff Bryant and Zach Stevenson blend an energetic pop sensibility with humour, lyrical depth and love of vocal harmony.
How the Good Lovelies (Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough and Sue Passmore) got together is a bit of a mystery: Sue remembers meeting her band mates during a limbo competition, Caroline thinks they met at a chess tournament, but Kerri is convinced they first crossed paths during a bar fight... Whatever the story may be, the ladies immediately realized they had something special, so they hit the road on a mission to charm Canadian audiences coast to coast. Funny and upbeat, with just a pinch of sass, the Good Lovelies' three-part harmonies, constant instrument swapping and witty on-stage banter will keep your toes tapping and a smile on your face.
