It looks like Summer has finally arrived here in Campbell River, meaning its time to enjoy the weather and get out of the house for a bit!
Besides the usual ever popular summer activities, such as heading down to McIvor Lake or taking an enjoyable hike on the popular Canyon View Trail, Campbell River is ready to provide a great list of activities to keep you entertained and happy.
Tonight will be Serious Coffee's weekly Open Stage Night, a chance to enjoy some local music and possibly spot some new talent. The event begins at 6pm and continues until 9pm.
The Museum will be hosting thier weekly Puppet Shows on both Tuesday and Thursday, with two chances to watch each day at either 10:30 am or 1:30 pm. Through these shows, children can learn about the history of Campbell River in a fun, entertaining fashion that is sure to catch their attention. After the show, there will be a craft time to provide an opportunity to try your own creativity. The cost is $2 per person, with children 3 and under free.
Also on Tuesday will be Campbell River's Lunch in the Square, a great opportunity to enjoy some free, live music while on your lunch. The event takes place every Tuesday from 11:30 am to 1 pm at the Spirit Square, and this week's musician will be the ever talented Luke Guthrie. Grab a bag lunch or head to one of the town's great resteraunts and grab some take-out to enjoy the show!
On Wednesday, Strathcona Gardens will be putting on another Teen Pool Party! Head on down to enjoy an evening of challenges, pool competitions and of course food and fun! This event is for youth going into and in Middle School (11-15). The party begins at 7:45 pm and ends at 9 pm, so grab your friends and enjoy. The cost is the regular $3 admission into the pool.
Thursday, July 28th, will be another opportunity to participate in one of Campbell River's River Concerts, a popular series of free concerts presented to the community to promote high spirits and a place to enjoy the beautiful weather. This week we are looking forward to hearing the exceptional talent of the band Tequila Mockingbird! They've played around the world and now they're here to perform a mix of 'Euro' and new age things to listen and dance to. The show will go from 7 pm to 9 pm, and everybody is welcome!
The Royal Coachman will be hosting their first ever Live Show on Thursday! The Royal Treatment will take place in the Carriage Room of the Royal Coachman and will include performances by Jinx Tha Konstrikta, Frantic Peace, Butterfinger Bombsquad, and Young Cap. The DJ will be Redeye Jedi. Doors for the event will open at 8pm with the show starting at 9 pm. Tickets will be $15 and include food. For more information, please call 250-202-2835.
Friday will be the start of Vancouver Island's annual Filberg Festival, taking place at the Filberg Heritage Park in the Comox Valley. The event will continue on through Sunday from 11 am - 8 pm, and on Monday from 11 am - 6 pm. Daily admission is $15, with kids 12 and under free, and advance 3 day passes will be $30. You can buy advance tickets online at Filbergfestivall.com, or at Thrify Foods. Head on down to enjoy some arts, crafts, food, and of course some great music! The Annual Dog Show will be taking place on Saturday, July 30 at the Nunns Creek Park for all you Dog Fanciers! It will include events such as Obediance trials, Three All Breed Championship Trials, and raffles. On Saturday there will be the Best Brace in Show and Rally Obedience. Finally, on Sunday there will be the Pug Booster, Border Terrier Booster, Juvenile Sweepstakes, and Junior Handling.
The Comox 53rd Annual Nautical Days 2011 will also be held this Saturday and Sunday at the Comox Marine Park. This event includes the 25th annual Bullhead Derby, the Nautical Kids Festival, Captin Cracker's Pet Parade, Jazz in the Park, and other such events. Events will begin at 10am with the last one ending at 10:30 pm.
Campbell River's Pier Street Farmer's Market will once again take place this Sunday by the Discovery Fishing Pier and features local arts, crafts, food and music. The market will go from 9 am to 2 pm.
Heriot Bay Inn will be having another Dinner Jazz Night on Sunday with performances by Noelle Maffin. This is a great excuse to head over to the island and enjoy a night out as well as a great meal!

July 18th to July 24th
This week is proving to be full of activities for the whole family, and thankfully it looks like the rain is going to stay away for a bit so we can enjoy them!
On both Tuesday and Thursday, the Museum will be holding their weekly puppet show at both 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to take the kids to learn about Campbell River history through a captivating means. After each show, there will also be one hour of crafts to participate in. The cost is $2 per person with children under the age of 3 free.
Tuesday will also be another chance to go and participate in Campbell River's weekly Lunch in the Square, a free concert provided to anyone who wishes to attend. The event takes place from 11:30 am and goes until 1:00 pm, so grab your lunch and come enjoy! This week's musician is Ali Romanow.
On Wednesday, July 20th, come join in in the Buckles Day at the Pool event which will be taking place at the Centennial Pool. Buckles the Red Cross Water Safety mascot is coming to help kids learn about how to be safe in and around the water this summer. There will be fun games, tattoos, and even water safety tips for parents. The regular pool admission fee applies, and the event will run from 12:00 pm to 2 pm.
The Haig-Brown Croquet and Tea will also be taking place on Wednesday afternoon at the Haig-Brown House. Register early as space is limited! To register, you can call the Museum at 250-287-3103. This event will also be taking place at later dates including August 3rd and 17th.
Comox Valley's Famers' Market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday from 9 am to noon at the Comox Bay Farm. This is a great opportunity to go and grab some fresh baking, vegetables, and meats and enjoy some local entertainment!
The Tyee Plaza Charity Jazz & Blues Weekend will be held on Thursday July 21st . It will kick off with the local Little Big Band, a fantastic 13-piece jazz combo. Be prepared to donate a Toonie to the Special Olympics, and enjoy a great evening in return. It will begin at 7pm and end at 9pm on Thursday night, and then continue on again till Saturday. At 7pm on Friday, performer David Vest and his trio will take the stage, as well as a jumping concert by the Sweet Tease Burlesque girls in what they promise to be a great 'family show'. Friday's donations will go towards Cops for Cancer.
The Saturday performance will be the highlight of the event with a performance by David Gogo and his fabulous blues band! This Nanimo boy has taken his own brand of electric blues world-wide, sharing stages with B.B King and Johnny Winter, was names Western Canada's Entertainer of the Year three times and also won Canada's Maple Blues award. Donations for this concert will go to the MS Society.
Strathcona Gardens will be holding a Babysitter on Skates night on Friday, July 22nd from 6 pm to 9 pm. Enjoy an evening out while the kids spend the night with their friends skating, playing games, getting their face painted, doing arts and crafts, and eventually winding down to a movie. You'll also have the opportunity to enjoy a silent auction of fine arts, crafts and fashion related items and services - all in the name of support for the Children's Fall Art Program!

The First Annual Discovery Islands Festival of Chamber Music will take place on Thursday at the Heriot Bay Inn and Quadra Island Community Centre. It will feature Baroque, Tango, short favorites of the repertoire, and intimate cello. Baroque in the Bay will take place in the Bayview room at 6:30 pm, and for $29 includes tapas and desserts. This event will take place through to the 17th.
The Miracle Beach Farmer's Market will also be on Thursday at the Miracle Beach Landing, 8667 Old Island Hwy in Black Creek. It will go from 4pm to 7pm.
The Tournament of Angels will take place this Saturday at the Storey Creek Golf Course beginning at 11 am. The $125 entry fee includes golf, a shared power cart, a prime rib and salmon dinner, a $30 tax receipt, great prizes, 18 hole-in-one chances, and auction items. All proceeds from this event will help those in Campbell River struggling with hunger, homelessness, addiction and isolation. To register you can call the Salvation Army office at 250-287-3720 ext. 201.

There will be live music by David Blinzinger and his GREEN HORNETS, as well as small garden demonstrations, organic foods, water conservancy, sustainability and lots of green exhibitors. There will be things for the kids to do, including prizes and free stuff! The event will start at 11 am and keep on rocking until 3 pm.
The Campbell River Art Gallery will be putting on another Super Saturday this weekend, with this week's theme being Wearable Art. This is your chance to make your own fashion statements with fabric, and make a piece of art that you can wear home! Admission is by donation and all materials will be provided. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information you can call the Art Gallery at 250-287-2261.
Courtenay will be celebrating their 41st Annual Market Days downtown on Saturday from 9 am to 7 pm.
This week's Community Clean-up will begin at 10am and volunteers will be meeting behind Banner's Resteraunt. The event is hosted by Greenways Land Trush, Tim Horton's and Communities in Bloom. Volunteers are needed to help clean up our downtown area from garbage, and will be provided with free coffee, t-shirts, mugs and water.

First Week of July
Hello everyone and welcome to July, and what looks to be Summer (finally)!!
The Bike Race began this morning at the Robert Ostler Park and bikers have already started arriving back in town after biking a course to the Snowden Demonstration Forest. 500 racers will be camping out in Campbell River tonight and as a celebration there is different booths set up down by the Spirit Square. If you're at work at can't make it to the day activities don't worry, the celebration will continue on into the evening! The band Reunion will be playing at the Spirit Square from 7-9.
Serious Coffee will be holding their weekly Open Stage Night tonight from 6-9, and everyone is welcome to either come down and participate or just sit back and enjoy the music. Make sure you come early though because space fills up quick!

Also on Thursday is this year's Justice for Animals at the Oyster Bay Resort. The night will feature bbq steak and chicken, a silent and live auction, a wall of wine, door prizes and more! Get ready for a peppy night of salsa, son, cumbia, and Latin jazz with Vancouver Island's premier Latin-soul ensemble. The concert will begin at 7 pm and go until 9 pm, so bring your lawn chairs and enjoy!
On Miracle Beach Landing Thursday will be the weekly Miracle Beach Farmers Market. Head on down to see what they have to offer and pick up some goodies.
Friday marks the kick-off for this year's Vancouver Island Music Fest!! This is a 3 day event that takes place at the CV Exhibition Grounds every year, and this years got a great line-up! 6 stages and 75 concerts and workshops are set up for your enjoyment, with performers such as David Crosby, Randy Newman and much, much more. They also have set up on-site riverside camping, kids activities, workshops, art projects, roving performers, and a Midnight Festival. If you haven't got your tickets yet, pick them up soon because they're running out fast!
Up on the mountain, Mount Washington will be holding their Suds & Scotch Festival at the Raven Lodge. This is a great tasting experiance to sample spirits and interact with experts about the beverages being offered. The Tina Jones Band will be bring a mix of Groove, Lounge, Deep House, and Funk music to the event.

Looking for something to do with the kids? The Museum will be putting on their Puppet Show tomorrow beginning at both 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. It will cost $2 per person, and crafts are included after the show!
The Tidemark Theatre will be showing the performance Good Timber: Songs and Stories of the Western Logger Tuesday beginning at 8pm. Come celebrate the golden age of logging and watch some great performers! Call 250-287-7465 for more information, or head down to the Tidemark Theatre to get your tickets. If you can't make it on Tuesday, the show will be having repeat performances all week!!
The weekly Lunch in the Square will be once again held on Tuesday, with this weeks performer being Helen Austin. Grab your lunch and enjoy what is forecasted to be a sunny, beautiful day while enjoying the free music. This event will take place from 11:30 am to 1 pm.
Serious Coffee will be hosting a Jam Night on Wednesday in Willow Point. Everyone is welcome to join in or just enjoy the music in a relaxed, informal setting.
Swicked Cycles will be holding a Bike Maintenance Clinic Wednesday, July 6th from 6:30-9pm. Call them at 250-914-2453 for more information.
The Puppet Show will also be taking place again later this week on Thursday at both 10:30am and 1:30pm at the Museum.
Also on Thursday is this year's Justice for Animals at the Oyster Bay Resort. The night will feature bbq steak and chicken, a silent and live auction, a wall of wine, door prizes and more! Cocktails will begin at 6pm with dinner starting at 6:30 pm. Sign up for a great dinner and a great cause! Tickets are $30 and available at Quality Foods and the Dogwood Pet Mart.
As you probably already know, Thursday will present another opportunity to join in on the River Concert Series! This week Campbell River will be welcoming ZANDUGA to the stage. Get ready for a peppy night of salsa, son, cumbia, and Latin jazz with Vancouver Island's premier Latin-soul ensemble. The concert will begin at 7 pm and go until 9 pm, so bring your lawn chairs and enjoy!
On Miracle Beach Landing Thursday will be the weekly Miracle Beach Farmers Market. Head on down to see what they have to offer and pick up some goodies.
Friday marks the kick-off for this year's Vancouver Island Music Fest!! This is a 3 day event that takes place at the CV Exhibition Grounds every year, and this years got a great line-up! 6 stages and 75 concerts and workshops are set up for your enjoyment, with performers such as David Crosby, Randy Newman and much, much more. They also have set up on-site riverside camping, kids activities, workshops, art projects, roving performers, and a Midnight Festival. If you haven't got your tickets yet, pick them up soon because they're running out fast!
Up on the mountain, Mount Washington will be holding their Suds & Scotch Festival at the Raven Lodge. This is a great tasting experiance to sample spirits and interact with experts about the beverages being offered. The Tina Jones Band will be bring a mix of Groove, Lounge, Deep House, and Funk music to the event.
Sunday, as you might already know, is Campbell River's Pier Street Farmer's Market, an open-air market that takes place every Sunday from 9am to 2pm.
There will also be an Indigo Jazz Trio at the Heriot Bay Inn from 6-9pm, a great dinner event and well worth going to!
Looking for a bit of an adventure? Why not sign up for a Historic Marine Tour through Desolation Sound. Knowledgeable local residents will guide you along the coast and through nearby islands on a journey through the past and present. The cost is $125 per person and goes from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.
