Tuesday, August 19th

  • Lunch in the Square with Luke Blu Guthrie from 11:30am to 1:15pm. 
  • Puppet Theatre at the museum at 10:30am followed by a craft. Final show of the summer at 1:30pm where you will meet the newest addition to the Museum’s puppet collection: Roderick Haig-Brown will star in “The Battle for Buttle Lake”. 250-287-3103 for details. $2 admission.

Wednesday, August 20th

  • Tea & Croquet at Haig-Brown House: Come enjoy an elegant afternoon of traditional English delicacies, coffee and tea, tours of Roderick’s study and Croquet of course! 1-4pm, cost is $8.50 per person (ask for group rate with 5+); pre-register with the Museum by calling 250-287-3103. 
  • Greenways Beaver Lodge Trail Maintenance Day  volunteer@greenwaystrust.ca Volunteers needed from 5-7pm. Meet at Trask Road parking lot dressed for the weather and for work – tools will be provided. 
  • Black Creek Community Fundraiser for Children’s Programs at Saratoga Speedway. The entire family is invited to a Double Feature Drive-in Movie: Pre-show at 7pm, Feature 1 (The Lego Movie) at 8pm and Feature 2 (Godzilla) at 9:30pm.   • Catch Kirsty Graham’s pictorial presentation on her latest venture into the Republic of Congo to research the species of ape known as bonobos. She will be at the Museum at 7pm; admission is by donation.

Thursday, August 21st   

  • The River Concert Series in Spirit Square: Dinah D’s Contraband Swing Club; 7pm-9pm. 
  • Puppet Theatre at the Museum! Final show of the summer! 10:30am and 1:30pm followed by a craft. $2 for all persons over the age of 2. 
  • After a summer full of great stories, come to the Library to be dazzled and entertained by professional magician Donald Dunphy’s “Magic of Reading” for kids and families at 2pm. A skillful blend of magic, illusion, enthusiasm, comedy, storytelling, mystery and audience participation – he even plans to levitate a member of the audience! Friday, August 22nd  

  • Active History Afternoon at the Museum offered from 1-4pm (Regular Admission). Final A.H.A for the summer! 
  • The Bearclaw Invitational 2014 – one of the biggest bike events in the world – is coming back to Mount Washington this Friday and Saturday. This is a great spectator event featuring some of the best freestyle mountain bikers AND it’s free to watch! www.mountwashington.ca

Saturday, August 23rd

  • Saratoga Speedway! Gates open at 5:30pm, racing starts at 7pm. More info at SaratogaRacing.ca/2014-race-schedule 
  • Quadra Island Community Market & Bazaar: arts, crafts, flea market finds, jewelry, soaps and more at the Quadra Community Centre, 10am-2pm. Yummy lunches, too – everyone welcome! Please call 250-285-3747 for more information. 
  • Take the Ride for Jeneece Place; 12pm at the Quinsam Hotel riding Hwy 28 to Gold River. All proceeds to the Queen Alexandra Foundation’s Jeneece Place. 250-204-4064 
  • Barn Dance, 7pm at the Balance Equestrian Centre. This family friendly event includes the Tasty Kitchen Outlet food truck, a beer garden and a silent auction. Proceeds go to the therapeutic riding program. www.balanceequestrian.com

  • Super Saturday drop-in art at the CR Art Gallery, 1-3pm. Cave art: what would a modern day petroglyph look like? Using brown paper, chalk, paint and markers, create your own mark to signify what life is like in 2014. For more information call 250-287-2261. 
  • Pooch Social at Comox Valley Dog Sports Centre at 8574 Reinhold Road, Black Creek from 7-8:30pm. Rescues: bring your friendly fosters to meet prospective families on this casual evening of tea and biscuits (all dogs must be vaccinated, friendly and healthy). Families looking for a new canine member: come on down and meet some of the North Island’s homeless dogs; puppies and adult dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes are waiting to meet their forever families.   • The Museum at Campbell River is offering another opportunity to explore the mysterious and amazing intertidal zone at the Willow Point Reef. 11am to 1pm, join biologist Sandra Milligan on a journey of discovery – including, sadly, a closer look at the Sea Star Wasting Disease that is taking its toll along the coast.   • Compost educator, Elaine Jansen will be releasing hundreds of ladybugs to the organic gardens to get rid of common pests without the use of pesticides or other chemicals! Remember to bring your camera – 6-7pm at 228 S. Dogwood St (CR Compost Education Centre).

  • It’s time for the passage of Discovery Passage! This free and family-oriented event is in its 8th year; the rules are simple: no fees, no prizes and no motors AND you must wear a personal floatation device. This event is open to residents and visitors alike. If you would like to participate you can register online at www.incampbellriver.net or call 250-830-4056 for more info. Gather in the lot next to the Government Wharf – crafts in the water at 9am and push off will be together at ~9:30am. The paddle will take about 30min and there will be a greeting ceremony on the other side. It is all timed to the tidal patterns, so there will be ~25min break before the return paddle.
