Supernatural British Columbia: Heriot Bay Inn

          Spend the night with a ghost or two on Quadra Island. If you’re waiting for your one true love – you’re not alone. The clichéd story of a widow waiting for her husband to return is one of the many stories that attaches itself to the Heriot Bay Inn. There’s also a white-haired woman and a man in suspenders that are known to wander the halls… and make their homes in some of the rooms. Number 9 and 14 are known to both staff and guests as some of the most active places at the inn. The woman is often seen in room 14, in the pub, or in the restaurant. Some of the noted activity has been the classic “feeling a presence” or “feeling as if you’re being watched” as well as windows opening and closing or furniture moving on its own.

          The hotel staff had the definition of a fright night one winter evening. After hearing noises coming from upstairs, those on shift went to investigate; only to discover all the doors to the rooms open. There was no one staying at the inn that particular night. Though bewildered, the staff closed the doors and went about their business. Later on, they heard the ruckus again, and went back upstairs to inspect – all the doors were wide open. 

      We all know there’s a lot of speculation about what’s real and what’s not when it comes to the supernatural… but maybe, just maybe, a night or two at the Heriot Bay Inn can sway your opinion. 

INSIDER TIP: Be sure to stop by the Herons Restaurant (not even for the hauntings, just the great eats – I, personally, recommend the grilled Swiss and mushroom!)

Attraction: Elk Falls Provincial Park & Suspension Bridge

          Campbell River's newest attraction is also one of its greatest. The Rotary Club of Campbell River spearheaded the suspension bridge project in 2009, and were supported by both BC Hydro and BC Parks. The bridge hangs 60 meters (approx. 200 feet) above the canyon and is sprawled across 64 meters (approx. 210 feet) from cliff to cliff.

          If you're physically disabled, the top viewing platform is wheelchair accessible. Unfortunately the bridge itself and the viewing platform near the falls are not.

A warning for those who have difficulty with stairs: there are 69 steps leading down to the bridge itself (with resting platforms).

          Not only is the view from the bridge spectacular, but the trail also offers access to the other trails, so you can continue your walk through the rest of the park.

Directions from Campbell River: 

• Follow the blue and white BC Parks highway signs to Elk Falls Park from Highway 19 at Campbell River. (Going straight -- do not cross the bridge on Tamarac) Highway 19 will become Highway 28. 
• Turn right off Highway 28 onto Brewster Lake Road.
• Access to bridge will be a via the Parking Lot Trail, please use parking lot at trail head. 

Please Note: There may be signs saying that Brewster Lake Road is closed, along Highway 28. Disregard these, as you are still able to access the Elk Falls parking lot which is located immediately to your right after you turn onto Brewster Lake Road.

Local Celebrity: Sybil Andrews

          In 1898, one of the world’s foremost printmakers and modernist linocut artists was born. Originally from Bury St. Edmunds, England, Sybil Andrews and her husband, Walter Morgan, made the move to Campbell River B.C. in 1947. Unfortunately, Andrews passed away in 1992. 

          Their beachfront home is now home to the Campbell River Arts Council and Sybil Andrews Heritage Society. The backyard offers idyllic ocean views and a small path leading out to the beach, so you can head out and explore the tidal pools or just a nice walk along the water.

          Visitors are welcome to come in and tour the cottage, though it is often in use for guitar lessons, meetings, or other art related activities. It’s also a very small venue, but may be rented out for minor events.

          In recent news, people have been campaigning to have Andrews featured on the back of the new £20 note. Anyone was allowed to be nominated via the bank’s website, and then people would rally behind their preferred artist. It was Vice Chair or the South Suffolk Labour Party, Jane Bashem, who put Sybil's name forward and has continued to campaign for Andrews.
