The days are getting warmer as the summer carries on, and every day more people can be found coming in to Campbell River to spend some time in the great outdoors and this beautiful city. In order to help both those visiting us and the wonderful people who live here, here is a list of some of the events taking place over the next week.

Monday, August 6th:
The Filberg Festival continues on Monday from 10am to 5pm at the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park in Comox. Over 120 artisans featuring pottery, woodcraft, metalwork, original paintings, jewellery, toys and more will be lined up across the park to join in with lively entertainment and a range of culinary treats. The Comox Valley Nautical Days will also be continuing through into Monday at the Marina from 11am to 10:45pm. For more information on the events happening on Monday, you can check out the Nautical Days schedule at www.comoxnauticaldays.ca.
Tuesday, August 7th:
The Campbell River Museum will be holding their Puppet Theatre at the Museum again on Tuesday at both 10:30am and 1:30pm. Grab your kids and head down to see Captain Vancouver and his friends as they perform a show based on the real events from Campbell River's history. Afterwards, kids and parents and invited to join in on craft time!
The cost of this show is $2 per person, and children 3 years old and younger get in for free. For more information on the show, you can contact the museum at either summer.programs@crmuseum.ca or 250-281-3103.
There will be another Lunch in the Square taking place on Tuesday from 11:30am to 1:15pm at the Campbell River Spirit Square. This week's performer will be pianist Phil Nowe.
Strathcona Gardens Recreation Centre will be holding a Ice Quest Skating Camp on Tuesday for kids ages 6-12. From 10am to 3pm, kids will be introduced to ice-skating in order to help them decide what ice activities to take in the fall. This camp will go through until August 10th.

Wednesday, August 8th:
Serious Coffee will be holding their weekly Jam Night on Wednesday evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. This is a great chance for musicians to sit and share their music in a relaxed, informal setting. Everyone is welcome to either join in and play along, or even to just sit back and enjoy the local music.
The band Savage West will be playing live at the Quinsam Hotel on Wednesday evening as well. For more information on this event, you can call the hotel at 250-286-9811.
Thursday, August 9th:
Ultimate Fun Day will be taking place today at the Centennial Pool - THE BIG ONE!! This event will include a variety of crazy games, competitions, face painting, and much more. Don't miss out!

Another 99.7 The River Concert will be held on Thursday evening from 7pm to 9pm! Don't miss out on a great performance by this weeks star band, Contraband Swing Club - a six-piece dance band from Gabriola Island! Grab your lawn chairs and head down to the Campbell River Spirit Square for a night of music and dancing.

The Gowlland Harbour Resort on Quadra Island will be hosting the Shari Ulrich Concert on Thursday beginning at 6pm. Shari will be joined by her daughter Julia Graff (a talented musician who will play violin, piano, accordian, guitar, mandolin, as well as joining in on vocals), and Ted Littlemore (piano, accordians, and vocals) in order to provide some great music as guests also enjoy the atmosphere of food and friends.
Shari Ulrich is a legendary singer, songwriter who has based her music on her own adventures and life experiences, and in doing so has become a great musician! I hope you will be able to make this show as the group works their way across Canada.

Friday, August 10th:
The Logger Sports and Salmon Sizzler starts this Friday and goes through until Sunday!!!
The North Island Logger Sports is a world class event with both local and international competitors. Presenting World Championships, Canadian Championships, along with events for youths, teens, ladies, intermediate, novice, and open competitors makes this event one of the largest in Canada. This event will be happening at Nunns Creek Park.

Also taking place on Friday is the Coho Books Kids' Fun Day! The day will start off at 11am at the Campbell River Spirit Square with story time, followed by a day of games and crafts! If you have come to Kids' Day before, you probably know just how fun it is. If not, get ready for a great time!
Saturday, August 11th:
The Logger Sports and Salmon Sizzler continues through the weekend! Check out the end of this blog to see the schedule.
Just for the fun of it, the Campbell River Spirit Square will be presenting musician Justine Collins in Concert on Saturday as she readies herself for an autumn tour. Justine is a local musician who will be accompanied by her four-piece band in order to provide some great entertainment. The concert will run from 1pm to 3pm, and will also include free popcorn and balloons!
The weekly Quadra Island Farmers' Market will be taking place on Saturday from 10am to 2pm. This market is held right behind the Credit Union just up from the ferry dock, and includes local foods, produce, goodies, music, entertainers and more!

The Campbell River Museum will be holding another of their famous Historic Boat Tours on Sunday, and this weeks destination is the ever beautiful Hardwicke and York Islands.
Hardwicke Island is for the most part rocky with just a thin strip of fertile land on the west side. It was first settles by William Kelsey in 1911, then about 5 years later a number of Japanese loggers arrived. The Bendickson family, originally from Norway, became permanent settlers on the island in 1918 where they operated their logging business for numerous years. Even today their descendents still maintain property there.
York Island, now a conservancy under BC Parks, was once the location of a WWII coastal defence site. Troups first arrived in August of 1939, and at peak times, as may as 500 men occupied the small 55 hectare island.

The Campbell River Pier Street Farmers' Market takes every Sunday through the summer at the entrance to the Discovery Fishing Pier. It is an open-air market that offers a wide selection of farm products, processed foods, an array of arts and crafts, as well as fun and entertainment. The market will run from 10am to 2:30pm.
