February 3rd – 9th
 
Monday, February 3rd    

  • The Museum’s new temporary exhibit, ‘Animals Among Us’, continues till the end of March. For further inquiries please call 250-287-3103. 
  • Noted author, fisherman and fly-tier, Larry E. Stefanyk, is beginning a fly-tying course at Sybil Andrews Cottage on Monday evenings (February 3rd, 10th, 17th & 24th) from 7pm-9pm. Cost is $65 and all materials are supplied. Anyone interested should contact Larry at 250-923-0939 or ifmm@shaw.ca. The first 10 ladies to sign up will receive 12 fishing flies, courtesy of Don Daniels (The Fishing Corner).

Tuesday, February 4th    

  • Batman Executive Producer, Michael Uslan, known as “The Boy Who Loved Batman”, has brought the super hero back to the big screen and will tell his story in Campbell River at the Tidemark Theatre along with the Silver Anniversary Screening of his original Batman Feature Film starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. The CR Creative Industries Council is please to present Michael Uslan sharing his personal story; there will also be a Q&A period before the film (rated PG13) and an autograph/book signing afterwards. 
  • Open Studio season begins at the Art Gallery with a new, live model to paint, sketch or sculpt from every week; runs Tuesdays from 6:30pm-9pm until March 11th. The drop-in fee is $12.50 (GST included) or you can pre-register for all nine sessions at the reduced rate of $95 (plus GST). Call 250-287-2261 to register. 
  • The Museum is please to begin accepting donations for its 9th Annual Giant Book Sale and Fundraiser coming up on March 15th & 16th, 2014. They accept all varieties of fiction and non-fiction, including biographies, mysteries, adventure, history and gardening; they cannot accept encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines or Reader’s Digest. Donations can be brought to the back entrance (off of 4th Ave) regular Museum hours (Tuesday – Saturday, 12pm-5pm).

Wednesday, February 5th     

  • CR Garden Club is a forum for the gathering and sharing of local and expert gardening knowledge and materials. Come meet Larry Stefanyk, Brain Ingle and other members who will speak about the joys and challenges of bonsai, 7pm-8:30pm at CR Baptist Church in the Band Room (North Entrance). Admission is free for members, $2 for visitors. New members welcome!

Friday, February 7th    

  • The Museum, in partnership with the Aquarium and Nuyumbalees Society, is pleased to present Dr. Dana Lepofsky (Professor of Simon Fraser University) sharing the little known story of the clam gardens on our coast and the research work taking place. The talk will address how early First Nations people managed to enhance the growth of shellfish in order to secure their food and livelihoods 7pm-9pm, entrance by donation, call the Museum at 250-287-3103 to reserve a seat. 
  • The Centre for Spiritual Living is showing “Darshan: The Embrace” as part of ‘Willow Point Film Fest’ at 2165 South Island Hwy. A glowing introduction to the life and work of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, the so-called ‘hugging saint’. Doors open for tea and popcorn by 6:30pm, movie at 7pm.   • Sleepover Party at Strathcona Gardens from 8:30pm – 8:30am for ages 7-11. Late-night skating, lazer tag, sports, relay races and games! Kids will wind down with a movie and wake up to a light breakfast. Call 250-287-9234 for details. 
  • Sew with Sylvia is a 3 session class at the community centre which will run Fridays from 4pm-6pm. Make matching pillowcase and pajamas. $60 for 6 hours.   

 Saturday, February 8th    

  • The Pacific Salmon Foundation is holding a Dinner & Auction at the Eagles Hall; Tickets are $50 and there is a Western Theme! Doors open at 5:30pm with cocktails, dinner at 7pm and live auction at 8:30pm. Call 250-923-0939 for more info. 
  • The First of three Lectures by Haig-Brown Writer in Residence, Andrew Nikiforuk, is entitled ‘Reflections on the Incredible Shrinking Media’ and will be from 1pm-3pm at the Museum, call 250-287-3103 to reserve a seat; the cost for each lecture is $6. 
  • Super Saturday at the Art Gallery: make your own cork stamp and valentines. Make some personalized, handmade valentines with cork stamps – you can even make your own stamp out of an old wine cork to take home with you! Drop-in from 1pm-3pm, materials provided, donations gladly accepted – call 250-287-2261 for more information. 
  • Sports Day Fun at Strathcona Gardens Pool from 1-3pm for kids. Compete for fun prizes, battery-powered dolphin and SeaDoo will be out, good messy fun for all ages. 250-287-9234

  • Lecture with Haig-Brown Writer in Residence at the Museum 
  • The Immigrant Welcome Centre presents an evening of dinner, dancing and entertainment to celebrate the Lunar New Year at the Community Centre. Entrance is by donation (contact 250-830-0171 for advance tickets, $15), 5:30pm until midnight, dinner is a 6:30pm; look forward to both silent and live auctions, raffles and a cash bar – must be 19+ to attend. www.immigrantwelcome.ca for more info. 
  • Everyone is welcome to come to dinner at Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church (2214 Campbell River Road), 4:30pm for a Free Community Dinner. Doors open at 4pm.

Sunday, February 9th   

  • Check out the Front Runners Island Race Series - Everything from 5K to Half-Marathon. Register online for the series or individual races: www.vira.bc.ca. The series takes place between January 12th and April 13th with a 15K race at 11am, April 6th in Merville. All ages and speeds welcome!
