Attraction: Strathcona Provincial Park

Hiking in the Strathcona mountains

Be one with nature at Strathcona Provincial Park. Start by picking up your park map and a list with detailed trail information, such as length and difficulty, at the Campbell River Visitor Centre. The park is a mere 45 minute drive from downtown Campbell River, and provides tons of photo opportunities along the way.
Located in the centre of Vancouver Island, Strathcona is the oldest provincial park in B.C. It covers more than 250,000 hectares and provides stunning views of lakes, rivers, mountains and trees. It’s the ideal escape for any nature lover, or even those simply longing for a change of scenery. It’s also got great fishing! During fishing season, there is an abundance of Rainbow, Dolly Varden, and Cutthroat.

Stumps at Buttle Lake
The biggest body of water in the park is beautiful Buttle Lake. Its namesake comes from Commander John Buttle, an explorer who surveyed the area in the 1860s. There is also a campground on the lake, which features 86s sites, 50 of which are reservable online via the BC Parks website. Near the entrance to the park, there’s Strathcona Park Lodge – it’s a private facility but all are welcome to stop by.

If you’re looking for a challenge, some of the more difficult hikes include Flower Ridge Trail – which offers stunning panoramic views, but includes a steep elevation change of 1,040 meters. Crest Mountain Trail also has a steep elevation change and runs for 5km, just a kilometer less than Flower Ridge. Not an experienced hiker? That’s okay! Strathcona has plenty of easier trails for you to explore. At only 800 meters, Lupin Falls has plenty of gorgeous scenery as you walk through a cool forest… plus, you’ll be rewarded with a pooling waterfall at the end. Shepherd Creek is a little bit longer, at 1.5km, with a suggested walking time of an hour and 15 minutes. It offers a shady walk along Ralph River and then ascends to a lively marsh. Those are just 4 of the many trails you can explore while out on your Strathcona Park voyage. So what are you waiting for? Adventure awaits!
