Calling all Tree Planters! The Museum at Campbell River is planning an Open House on Sunday, February 17, from 1pm to 3pm, in support of the upcoming exhibit entitled ‘Bend, Plant, Move Along: Tree Planting Culture in BC’. This exhibit will examine the experience of tree planting in all of its trials, joys and “soggy, gritty exuberance” to quote Charlotte Gill. The Open House will be hosted by author Charlotte Gill, currently the 2013 Haig-Brown Writer in Residence. The Museum is currently looking for photographs, stories, artifacts, artworks or any other accoutrements surrounding the experience of being a tree planter. All former or current tree planters are invited to drop-by and share their experiences and memorabilia. From the Open House, the Museum aims to create the exhibit ‘Bend, Plant, Move Along’ which is scheduled to open on April 5, 5 pm at the Museum. Please spread the word to anyone who is a member of the tree planting ‘tribe’ of Vancouver Island! Call Ken Blackburn at the Museum at 287-3103 for more information.

Kesu’: The Art and Life of Doug Cranmer ~ Museum - Until February 17
A temporary exhibit curated by the UBC’s Museum of Anthropology that will be on display at the Museum at Campbell River from October 19, 2012 until February 17, 2013. Doug Cranmer was a Kwakwaka’wakw artist (although he referred to himself as a ‘whittler’ and a ‘doodler’) who pushed the boundaries of what many consider to be 'traditional' Northwest Coast art. The exhibit shows a wide range of Cranmer’s artistic works including masks, bentwood boxes, bowls, and prints, and his important “Abstract series” of paintings on mahogany plywood. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 12-5pm. For more information please call 250.287.3103.
Two Eyes Five Legs, Right Hand Left Hand ~ Exhibition - January 31 to March 7
Jo Lechay paints in big bold strokes and quick line. Her large images capture expression and movement, fuelled by her long professional career in dance and theatre. Lechay finds the immediacy of children's paintings and the mischief of graffiti especially rich sources of inspiration. She draws and paints best when improvising with her whole body and every undertaking is a visceral investigation of her. The CR Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 12-5pm. For more information please call 250.287.2261.
Cool Connections ~ Exhibition - January 31 to March 7
Walton's photographs capture delicate and intimate encounters with the frosted, frozen and fleeting. Her work focuses on detail, glints of unexpected color, and the dance of reflections in a piece of ice. These photographs can be described as naturalistic, but most of them are also abstract". The CR Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 12-5pm. For more information please call 250.287.2261.
