Discovery Passages Events


OCTOBER 7th to 13th  

Tuesday, October 8th
  •    Campbell River Festival of Film continues with “Blackfish”, the story explores the sometimes devastating consequences of trying to keep an intelligent creature in captivity. Rated PG-13, $11.43 +tax. 
  •   ‘Open Studio’ at the Art Gallery features live model figure drawing. Every Tuesday from 6:30pm to 9pm between October 8th and November 12th. The drop-in fee to participate is $12.50, artists can pre-register for all six sessions for only $55! Call 250-287-2261 for more info.

Wednesday, October 9th 
  •  If you have a loved one or work with people with mental illnesses, you can gain a better understanding of what they are going through by attending the “Hearing Distressing Voices” workshop at the Maritime Heritage Centre from 1pm-4:30pm. In partnership with the CR Beacon Club and the Columbian Centre Society, registration is $25 and space is limited to 25 people. Contact robyn.ellsworth@shaw.ca or 250-286-8838 to register.
  • 7pm at the Maritime Heritage Centre will be a screening of the documentary “On the Road to Find Out” where filmmaker Paul Manly tells the story of three individuals who experienced having to leave their homes to seek psychiatric treatment in Nanaimo; the 32-minute film will be followed by a discussion nd refreshments (free admission).

Thursday, October 10th
  • Campbell River Search and Rescue is Recruiting New Members! An Information Session & Open House will be held at the CRSAR Hall, 261 Larwood Rd, behind No. 2 Firehall, at 7:30pm.   • Tidemark Lounge presents Rick Benn and Annie Handley, 7pm, $10 at the door.
  • World Premiere “Serenity Collection” presented by iEcotherapy at the Museum at Campbell River. Bringing nature’s calming ambiance to the family living room to help reduce physical and psychological illnesses for patients that can’t easily get outside and enjoy nature themselves.
Friday, October 11th
  • Family Pizza and Movie Night at Strathcona Gardens: enjoy a relaxing skate on the ice while watching a family flick (G/PG). 5:15pm to 8pm with the film starting at 6pm, admission is $4/person or $10/family which includes 2 slices of pizza and a juice box. All ages welcome – look for this event the 2nd Friday of every month!

Saturday, October 12th
  •  Tidemark Cinemas presents “The Heat”: an uptight FBI Special Agent is paired with a foul-mouthed Boston cop to take down a ruthless drug lord. Starring Sandra Bullock, Michael McDonald and Melissa McCarthy (Rated R); $5 +tax.
  • Third Annual Pumpkin Fest in Spirit Square! Lots of family fun from 11am to 2:30pm: pumpkin carving contest for all ages, face painting, celebrity pumpkin seed-spitting contest, and live music with Mission Hill Band!
  • Coastal Black’s Pumpkin Fest is on, Saturdays & Sundays until October 27th (Including Thanksgiving Monday!); FREE admission: pumpkin ring toss, pumpkin bowling, pumpkin photo booth and a hay bale maze! 10am to 4pm – come pick your pumpkin! 2186 Endall Road, Black Creek. cbpumpkinfest@gmail.com
  •  “Education is Power” presentation at Shot in the Dark Café with local artists and an open mic. Entrance by donation.  
  • VIMX 2013 Championship final series Rounds 15&16 at the local track (advance tickets from BOARDWALK).
  • In the spirit of fun and scary, it’s time for the October Lego Day! ‘Spooky Lego Day’ at the Museum will run from 1 pm to 2:30 pm: bring your parents and see what scary things you can build! Lego Master Alex Witcombe (a.k.a. Spook Dawg) will guide you through the afternoon. Lego Day is a great way to build that creative brain power and spend some quality time imagining ‘what if?’ The cost for Lego Day is only $5.00 (parents are free). Sunday, October 13th
  •  Free Family Swim at Strathcona Gardens – all ages welcome from 12:30pm to 4pm; children under 7 must be accompanied in the water by an adult.
  •  VIMX 2013 Championship final series Rounds 15&16 at the local track (advance tickets from BOARDWALK).
