BC Parks & CR Environmental Committee need your help to clean up the shoreline of the Quinsam and Campbell rivers. Garbage bags, gloves, water & refreshments are provided. Working together, we can protect our rivers & fish. Meet at TimberWest (Comox) Logging Bridge on Hwy 28, from 10am to 2pm.

is welcome to join them for lunch at Dick’s Fish and Chips at 1:15pm. Meet the
Tour de Rock team at the CR Common from 4:30-6pm where there will be
presentations and head shaving and more! Pizza Party at Boston Pizza at 6pm
with all the riders and crew: tickets can be purchased from Chan Nowosad Boates
(980 Alder St.) or at Boston Pizza for $25. There will be a silent auction and

African Hand-drumming

Experience the joy of rhythm and
tap into the innate abilities we’re all born with when you sign up for African
hand drumming. Instructor Monica Hofer will provide the drums for these
fun-filled lessons, and participants will learn something new each week,
including traditional rhythms. The program is offered Tuesdays, 6-7pm from Sept
24th thru Oct 29th at the Sportsplex (activity room 1);
this six-evening program is $76.

The City of Campbell River’s Youth
Action Committee is looking for open-minded, innovative and motivated youth (14
to 18 years old) who want their say on community issues. The Youth Action
Committee provides City staff and Council a youth perspective on community
issues like art, recreation, safety, transportation, culture, parks and the
environment. The committee launches again this fall with a workshop on
Saturday, November 1. It will meet twice per month on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5
p.m. to discuss topics important to youth in Campbell River. Application forms
for the Youth Action Committee are available at Timberline and Carihi school
offices, the Sportsplex and the Community Centre. Applications are due by
September 27 and can be submitted via email until 11:59 p.m. or dropped off

(until October 12th) participants will head out from the Sportsplex
in groups based on running speed and ability; the clinic includes informative
talks and presentations on clothing, stretching and nutrition. Participants

Haig-Brown Memorial Lecture

The CR Arts Council, the
Haig-Brown Institute, the Museum at CR and School District 72 are partnering
this year to present the 2013 Haig-Brown Memorial Lecture. 6:30pm-8:30pm at the
newly renovated Rivercity Stage Theatre (1080 Hemlock St.), this year’s lecture
is entitled “Land for the People: A New Environmental Language for BC” and will
be delivered by noted Canadian author Harold Rhenisch. The memorial Lectures
were created to provide an annual forum for writers to inspire a new generation
with their vision and literary excellence. Call the Arts Council to reserve a
seat for this historic event – the cost is $10 and all proceeds go to support
the Memorial Lecture. He will also be speaking at the Campbell River Museum
from 10am till noon on ‘Photographing for Blogging’ – bring your camera and
walk with Rhenisch through the scenery of CR and learn the techniques of
photography as a form of environmental narrative. The afternoon session from
1-4 will be the same as the evening lecture. The cost for the combined workshop

Haig Brown Festival

This popular festival, held on River’s Day each year at Haig-Brown House (2250 Campbell River Rd or Hwy 28), is a great family event with lots to see and do. The festival explores the themes of fishing, literature and conservation, with the addition of outdoor recreation and safety. Fly tying demos, fly fishing lessons, children’s games and crafts, good food, readings from Haig-Brown writings, great displays and property tours are all part of the festival which also serves to showcase local artistic and musical talent. Admission is free and meant for all ages – for more information contact the Museum.

Celebrate River’s Day with a tour
of Baikie Island! The tour will highlight the amazing transformation of the
Island from an industrial site to an award-winning nature reserve. After the
tour, head over to Haig-Brown House to continue the River’s Day festivities
that take place from noon to 4pm. There will be food, music, fly-tying and lots
of other activities to enjoy. The Baikie Island tour takes place from 10:30am
till noon. It is free of charge but participants must pre-register. To book your spot, please call the Sportsplex.
