Discovery Passages January 13th to 19th



Monday, January 13th   

  • Showing at the North Island College Theatre (1685 Dogwood St.) at 7:15pm, Cinema Politica Campbell River has a number of films lined up in an environmental/social justice series, the first of which is titled “Peace Out”, a film by Charles Wilkinson. Tuesday, January 14th  

  • International Cooking Class at Robron Centre, room A114, every Tuesday from 6pm-8pm (January 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th). Each class is $35 or the series of four classes for $100. All registration fees are donated to the International Women’s Group in support of their activities, day trips and guest speakers.   • CR Festival of Film presents “Cas and Dylan” at the Tidemark Theatre, 7pm. Starring Richard Dreyfuss and Tatiana Maslany. Two unlikely companions hit the road, encountering a series of bizarre twists and turns along their cross-country journey. And it isn’t long before they realize that, in searching for an escape route, they may have found their place in the world. 
  • Open Studio season begins at the Art Gallery with a new, live model to paint, sketch or sculpt from every week; runs Tuesdays from 6:30pm-9pm until March 11th. The drop-in fee is $12.50 (GST included) or you can pre-register for all nine sessions at the reduced rate of $95 (plus GST). Call 250-287-2261 to register.

Wednesday, January 15th

  • Philosophers’ Café at Sybil Andrews Cottage (2131 South Island Hwy). Drop in to a friendly forum where you can join the conversation or just sit back and listen. Each cafe offers a speaker who delivers a 10minute talk on a provocative topic, and then the floor is open for 50 minutes of discussion. The moderator for each evening is Greg Hill, executive director of the CR Community Living Association. The Cafe runs 6:30-7:30pm and is free; there are tea/coffee/cookies by donation. Topic: Tough on Crime or Smart on Crime? Does a minimum sentence make sense, or should a judge be free to try to make the punishment fit the crime? Is there a place for restorative justice?


Thursday, January 16th

  • Artist’s Trading Card Event at the Art Gallery, 7pm-8pm. Please bring 15-20 cards to trade and tell your friends so there will be new faces & cards – everyone is welcome! (2.5x3.5, like baseball cards) The theme is open – cards should be original (no photocopies) size 2.5x3.5 (like baseball cards) and they can be painted, collaged, mixed media, photographs, 3D shapes or found objects – there are no rules!. These are miniature works of art and are meant to be traded, not bought or sold; it is a fun, social and creative program that meets four times a year to swap trading cards. Friday, January 17th 

  • Cosmic Rock N’Glow Swim for ages 11-17 at Strathcona Gardens. An evening of games, challenges and fun - $5 admission includes a glow item, snacks and drinks. Call 250-287-9234 for more information.

Saturday, January 18th 

  • Discover Old Time Gospel Singing at the Discovery Community Church, 7pm at 250-10th Ave. Everyone Welcome!

Sunday, January 19th 

  • Check out the Front Runners Island Race Series - Everything from 5K to Half-Marathon. Register online for the series or individual races: www.vira.bc.ca. The series takes place between January 12th and April 13th with a 15K race at 11am, April 6th in Merville. All ages and speeds welcome! 
  • First Annual Dentistry from the Heart with Dr. Mike Finn (& team) at Dogwood Dental. Arrive early (and dress appropriately with blankets and snacks in case of a long line-up outside); registration begins at 7:30am. The choice of filling or extraction will be performed for those 19+ who can’t get dental help elsewhere. Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis; the first 50 patients are guaranteed to be seen! This event will run from 8am until 5pm.
