The Campbell River Museum will be holding another of their famous Historic Boat Tours on Sunday, and this weeks destination is the ever beautiful Hardwicke and York Islands.
Hardwicke Island is for the most part rocky with just a thin strip of fertile land on the west side. It was first settles by William Kelsey in 1911, then about 5 years later a number of Japanese loggers arrived. The Bendickson family, originally from Norway, became permanent settlers on the island in 1918 where they operated their logging business for numerous years. Even today their descendents still maintain property there.
York Island, now a conservancy under BC Parks, was once the location of a WWII coastal defence site. Troups first arrived in August of 1939, and at peak times, as may as 500 men occupied the small 55 hectare island.
For more information on the Historic Boat Tours, you can contact the museum at 250-287-3103.
