Oceans Day is celebrated world-wide on June 8th to recognize our living oceans and all the creatures that inhabit them. It also celebrates the working coast and the sea as a place of recreation. This fun-filled and free family oriented event takes place at the Pier, in the parking lot next to the Maritime Heritage Centre, from 10AM to 3PM.
Campbell River will be celebrating the opening of our new Discovery Passage Aquarium. The Coast Guard and DFO will be offering tours of their boasts, kids can enjoy a Bouncerama, there will be music and a variety of food vendors along with BBQ salmon samples from the BC Salmon Farmers Association. Inside the Maritime Heritage Centre, the Immigrant Welcome Centre is hosting ‘A Taste of Asia’. Other participants include the Museum at Campbell River, Beaver Aquatics, CR Whale Watching, Quinsam River Hatchery and Ecole Phoenix Middle School – Don’t miss this chance to learn about the ocean at our doorstep. For inquiries or further information, call Cynthia Bendickson.
Along with the Aquarium opening Nick Templeman, a veteran wildlife tour guide of 14 years will be introducing his new business on Oceans Day - Campbell River Whale and Bear Watching Excursions, and will offer free short boat trips from the Pier over to Quadra Island.  As well, Discovery Marine Safaris will be holding a grand opening at their new location next to Beaver Aquatics.
Excellent entertainment is planned with CR Dance Extreme on the main stage in the morning followed by musicians Justine Collins and Jim Chisholm, then Pacific Ukes to wrap up the day.  A favourite free activity is being offered at the Pier - fishing rod rental fees will be waived during the event.   Kid oriented activities include face painting by Magical Faces and free puppet shows put on by the Museum at Campbell River’s summer students.  And while you are there, don’t forget to visit the exhibit ‘What Lies Beneath’ inside the Maritime Heritage Centre, and take in a ‘Taste of Asia’.
