April 4thLecture by Patricia Roy ~ Museum at Campbell River
British Columbians have always been proud of their province but have often felt misunderstood by other Canadians and badly done by in Confederation whether it be in delays in constructing the Canadian Pacific Railway, the size of federal subsidies, immigration policies, freight rates, or proposed constitutional changes. Yet, at the same time they have also been loyal Canadians. Join the Museum at Campbell River on Thursday evening, April 4, at 7 pm for a unique talk entitled “British Columbia’s Ambiguous Relations with the Rest of Canada”. With the assistance of editorial cartoons dating from the 19th into the 21st century, Dr. Patricia Roy will examine this ambiguous relationship. She taught Canadian history at the University of Victoria for many years and has published several books on aspects of British Columbia’s history. The latest is Boundless Optimism, a biography of Richard McBride, British Columbia’s premier from 1903 to 1915. The lecture is made possible through UVic’s Speakers Bureau. The cost for the talk is $6.00. Please call the Museum at 287-3103 to reserve a seat.

April 6th‘Bend, Plant, Move Along ~ Museum at Campbell River
On Saturday, April 6th, the Museum at Campbell River is opening a new temporary exhibit entitled ‘Bend, Plant, Move Along’: Treeplanting Culture in British Columbia, that features the history of tree planting and up to the present day. Curated by Ken Blackburn and composed of photos, artifacts and anecdotes contributed by individuals who have worked in the silviculture industry in BC, this exhibit portrays the lifestyle that has resulted from the dirty work of tree planting.
Some of the earliest tree planting in this part of Vancouver Island came about as a result of the Sayward Fire of 1938. Since then, trees have been viewed as a renewable resource and tree planting as a way of life. With inspiration taken from Charlotte Gill’s book Eating Dirt, the exhibit is a true life portrayal of this challenging way of making a living.
The Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from noon to 5:00pm. For inquiries call 250-287-3013.
