January 20th - 26th  




Monday, January 20th   

  • Celebrate Family Literacy Week with free admission to the Museum at Campbell River, January 20th to 27th. 
  • Open forum on climate change with Dr. Stewart Cohen in the Thulin Room (Maritime Heritage Centre) at 6:30pm

Tuesday, January 21st

  • International Cooking Class at Robron Centre, room A114, every Tuesday from 6pm-8pm (& January 28th). Each class is $35 or the series of four classes for $100. All registration fees are donated to the International Women’s Group in support of their activities, day trips and guest speakers.   • Open Studio season begins at the Art Gallery with a new, live model to paint, sketch or sculpt from every week; runs Tuesdays from 6:30pm-9pm until March 11th. The drop-in fee is $12.50 (GST included) or you can pre-register for all nine sessions at the reduced rate of $95 (plus GST). Call 250-287-2261 to register.

Thursday, January 23rd  

  • ‘Animals Among Us’ is a new, temporary exhibit at the Museum which will run to the end of March. There is a charming 16-month calendar that accompanies the exhibit available for purchase in the gift shop. For further inquiries please call 250-287-3103.

Friday, January 24th  

  • Please join the board and staff of the Art Gallery for the Grand Opening of their 20th Anniversary Exhibition and Gala at 7pm. Enjoy live music with renowned guitarist, Rodrigo, as well as cake, local wine, door prizes and more, all while being among the first to view their special 20th Anniversary Exhibit.   •  The Impalas are rockin’ at the Quinsam Hotel again, 9:30pm Friday and Saturday.

 Saturday, January 25th 

  • Randy ELVIS Friskie is touring with his Las Vegas Show Band in “The Real Tribute to the King of Rock and Roll” at the Tidemark Theatre. Friskie’s ‘spine-tingling’ performance brings the King to life with memorable moments and music from Elvis’ movies.   • Friends of Music present Swedish-American piano virtuosos Elias-Axel Pettersson in Concert at Trinity Presbyterian Church (145 Simms Road), 2:30pm. Tickets are $20/$10, available at the Visitor Centre. To learn more about Elias visit www.eapettersson.com   
  • Campbell River’s “traditional” celebration: ‘A Nite with Rabbie Burns’ returns to the Legion with Dinner and Dancing. Tickets are $25, available at the Legion Bar (301 – 11th Ave). 
  • North Island Model Railroaders Annual Show at the Museum at Campbell River, Saturday 12pm-5pm and Sunday 12pm-4pm. Incredible displays of model railroad equipment, scenery and miniature buildings – something for the whole family to enjoy. And for the 4th year in a row there will be a fascinating display/demo of fully-functioning, radio-controlled, miniature heavy equipment – watch them do amazing work with real hydraulics! $7/person or $20 for the whole family (kids under 6 are free).   • Super Saturday at the Art Gallery from 1pm-3pm. In celebration of the Gallery’s 20th Anniversary, make art in multiples of 20: using a grid of 20 squares, make images with patterns, colours, or cut-out pictures and then bring them together to form one large piece! Materials provided, children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. 
  • Come dance away the post-Christmas blues at the “Winter Shuffle (grades 6-9). Meet up with friends, dance to the best new music and win great prizes. Supervised by Recreation staff – no in-and-out privileges (once you’re in, you’re in!). Get your tickets asap at the Sportsplex or Community Centre ($10). The event will take place 7pm-9:30pm at the Sportsplex Gym. 
  • Pizza & Pajama Dance Party at Strathcona Gardens (ages 6-12). The dress code for this skating event is pajamas and long underwear (prizes for the ‘best’ dressed). Enjoy hanging with the girls, listening to your favorite tunes, dancing, skating, snacking on pizza, singing karaoke and playing games! $10 includes skate rentals and pizza. Sunday, January 26th 

  • Celebrate Family Literacy week with a free fun swim at Strathcona Gardens, 12:30pm-4pm. 
  • Grab your skis or snowboard to help change lives for the better! Ski for MS at Mt. Washington Alpine Resort is a fundraiser to support programs and services for people affected by Ms. Register online at www.smski.ca to get started – each participant who raises the pledge minimum (varies on age group) will enjoy a great day of free skiing or snowboarding along with a lot of special perks for the day, including entrance into the Ski for MS Vertical Challenge: a fun endurance event (not a race). Collect bead necklaces each time you reach the base of the Hawk 6ix Pack Chairlift – how many times can you go top to bottom in 4 hours? Open to all abilities (participants can choose which route they take down the mountain.). 
  • North Island Model Railroaders Annual Show at the Museum at Campbell River Continued (12pm-4pm). 
  • 2014 Walk for Memories at the CR Common. Register at www.walkformemories.com or on the day at 12pm. Walk 1pm-2pm. Call 778-420-1234 for more info. 
  • Check out the Front Runners Island Race Series - Everything from 5K to Half-Marathon. Register online for the series or individual races: www.vira.bc.ca. The series takes place between January 12th and April 13th with a 15K race at 11am, April 6th in Merville. All ages and speeds welcome!
